Co-Operative Leadership Program

As a producer owned Co-operative, Amalgamated Dairies Limited (ADL) plays a vital role in the health of the dairy industry of Prince Edward Island. We process 110 million liters of fresh island milk each year and employ over 250 staff. Founded by a Special Act of Incorporation in April 1953, ADL was created to centralize cheese, butter and milk processing and provide strength to the dairy industry. This role is as important today as it was 63 years ago.

The dairy industry continues to evolve in complexity both on the farm and in the marketplace. We believe it is important to provide training opportunities to our members that will continue to build upon the legacy as it exists and develop future leaders who will govern ADL into the future.

The Board of Directors of Amalgamated Dairies Limited have provided support to allow us to introduce a Co-operative Leadership Program for young Island dairy farmers in the 18-35 age group. We are looking for up to 10 young people who are actively involved in the dairy industry to participate. These participants will have the opportunity to experience a number of learning opportunities to develop leadership skills; over the course of 5 – two day sessions that will begin in the spring of 2017 and conclude in the fall of 2018. Several of these sessions will be held jointly with participants from the Ontario based co-operative Gay Lea and will involve some time spent in other provinces. Course, travel and accommodation costs will be funded by ADL. A tentative itinerary is as follows:

Spring 2017
Two day training session in Summerside introducing ADL to participants; including tour of ADL plant(s).

Fall 2017
Two day training session held jointly with Gay Lea group of young leaders on PEI.

January 2018
Two day training session in Ontario with an opportunity to attend Gay Lea AGM.

Spring or Summer 2018
Two day training session in Western Canada with Gay Lea group. May also include participants from the Western provinces.

Fall 2018
One day training and graduation ceremony. May also participate in one and half day youth leadership conference focusing on challenges and opportunities facing the dairy industry hosted by Gay Lea Foods in Ontario.
